Performance
This is more than a dance performance. It is a mythological climate ritual, an artistic warning. And a place for collective transformation.

Only a short bus ride from the urban Oslo, the audience arrives at Bjønndalen Bruk in Nittedal. Here, the old mill rises as a majestic backdrop for a stage covered in sand—a flowing desert landscape that seamlessly blends into the surrounding nature. Eight dancers occupy the vast sand dune. Here, Sand Flight unfolds as a corporeal and sensory performance at the borderland between dance and ritual.

The Norwegian premiere of Sand Flight is a powerful visual production, created by the award-winning Norwegian choreographer Ingri Fiksdal, in collaboration with Jonas Corell Petersen, who has established himself as one of the leading figures among a young generation of directors.

The dancers' movements on the sand dune evoke associations with ancient civilizations and create space for contemplating possible futures. With soundscapes by Lasse Marhaug and a new choral work by Gaute Tønder, the soundscape shifts between bass-heavy landscapes and human voices. The sand dune contains small remnants from countless past lives and puts our cities and lives into perspective.

In a future Norway, where temperatures rise and winds change direction, desert-like sand dunes begin to appear in parks and urban spaces. They become new, moving landmarks—clear signs that nature is taking space in the city.

Sand Flight revisits a past and envisions a future where sand and soil particles take over landscapes and cities, exploring how our urban lives are transformed in the face of global warming. The production challenges and seduces, inviting the audience to rethink the city, nature, and ourselves. A magnificent piece of climate fiction in physical form.

"We are left with the hope that we can adapt step by step and create meaning in chaos. Just as our existence is part of nature’s order, in contrast to the past 200 years, it is equally fascinating and evocative how nature co-creates with singers and dancers"
- Dorte Grannov Balslev / ISCENE

Sand Flight will had it's world premiere in Toronto in June 2025 before embarking on a European tour, adapted to local conditions and featuring local performers. The Norwegian premiere takes place at the raw and atmospheric Bjønndalen Bruk in Nittedal, only 20 minutes from Oslo city center. Shuttle buses will be arranged for the audience.
